Chapter Seven
I immediately reached for him, but I was slower than his son, Logan grasping his fatherâs arm while everyone stared. The moment they made contact, the bubble of power burst, giving way to the touch of the son to the father. Which had me instantly thinking about who might be controlling and it if the ravens were right and that Logan himself had no idea he was even magical.
Certainly made sense as the younger helped the gasping elder steady himself, Denton doing nothing to fight off his doctor childâs guidance as Logan quickly led his father away from the receiving line. I followed, as did Paulina and Clarissa, and it wasnât long until we found ourselves yet again in Margateâs abandoned study, though it was Denton who sat this time beside the fire, accepting a glass of water from the trembling and visibly upset Borden Minch.
âIâm fine,â Denton grumbled. âJust a moment of weakness. Donât make a giant thing about it, any of you.â
âPlease, Dad,â Logan said, clearly accustomed to his gruff parentâs façade and visibly worried as his youthful face lined far more deeply than it should have for someone his age and influence. âLet me examine you, at least. That wasnât nothing. It could be an undiagnosed heart condition brought on by stress. And goodness knows your diet is terrible.â
Denton tried to bat his sonâs hands away, but Paulina joined the conversation with her own voice now thin and wavering.
âIâve just lost your father,â she whispered. âDenton, dear, I couldnât bear to lose you, too. Do stop being a stubborn ninny and let Logan look at you.â
I was the first to admit when I was wrong. And Iâd made a massive number of assumptions about this family from the get-go I was quite certain were accurate based on my experience. But the look of real love the three exchanged had me second-guessing myself. More so when Denton sighed and nodded, grasping his sonâs hand in his own before smiling.
âThank you, son,â he said, that rough harshness gone from his tone. âYou know Iâm not good with grief. Youâre both right. Iâve been an ass.â He settled back as Logan loosened his fatherâs tie further, unbuttoning his shirt to give him breathing room.
âI know, Dad,â Logan said. âItâs okay. Weâre all missing Grandfather.â
Huh. I hadnât meant that grunt to make it past my own mind, but Mavis caught it.
I know he comes across as a hard case, she sent, but he truly loves his son and mother. And loved his father. Itâs part of the reason I hesitated to investigate. Georgia, this is a good family. If one of them did kill Margateâ¦
And just tried to kill Denton, I sent back. Love or not, Mavis, if the perpetrator doesnât know they have magic and are acting on instinct, it doesnât matter how they feel about anyone. That kind of wild power has to be shut down before someone else gets hurt. The three animals connected to my mind
